America's Only Urban Garden Show

May 13-21, 2006

Butler Field in Grant Park, Chicago

Synopsis and Photography by Robert F. Gabella

The product of an alliance between The Chicago Park District and show partners the Parkway Foundation, the City of Chicago, design Chair Douglas Hoerr of Douglas Hoerr Landscape Architecture, Inc. and Presenting Partner The Target Corporation, Garden In A City 2006 was the first of what is hoped to be an annual event, showcasing a range of urban landscapes at a time of the year in which the plant material is actually seasonal.

True, the MidAmerica Horticultural Trade Show, an industry event showcased in Chicago each January, and the Chicago Flower and Garden Show, a consumer event hosted each March, both offer design, plant material and product inspiration at times of the year when the ground is more often than not frozen.  But gardeners and backyard adventurers of all levels of expertise - from novice to seasoned - now had the unique opportunity to see plants donned in their typical late Spring foliage and floral attire and displayed in realistic, in-ground settings.  In addition, balcony, container and even rooftop options were all covered in great detail, and more than four dozen exhibit spaces offered every gardening style imaginable.

As you navigate the gallery below, consider the opportunity to visit the exhibit again in 2007, as photos cannot begin to capture the serenity of water flowing under a bridge or the spicy fragrance of deciduous Azaleas in full bloom.  And of course, as you imagine your own backyard, balcony or rooftop paradise in its prime, you can't help but leave an event like this with ideas both large and small - all of which can change the way you think about your own approach to outdoor living.
